Hiking Merit Badge 10-mile Hike – Saturday, October 24th

UPDATE – We are waiting to hear from the Lake Erie Council this week in regards to updated guidance for activities and meetings. We will send out an update for the hike later this week, so please keep your eyes open for that. Thanks!

Our second hike of the 2020-21 Hiking merit badge series will be Saturday, October 24th. We are hiking 10 miles in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Our route on the Jaite Loop will take us over rugged hills, through wooded valleys, across the Cuyahoga River, and along the historic Towpath Trail. We will also hike to Brandywine Falls, one of the most popular and picturesque locations in the park. This hike will have a little more elevation change than our first hike, but the trail locations should be pretty well defined.

The crew is meeting in the Jaite Trailhead parking lot, on the north side of Vaughn Road, near the intersection of Vaughn and Riverview Roads. Please arrive by 9:00 AM so that we can get the hike started on time. We are also asking that you please sign up on TroopWebHost, so we know who is planning to attend. Our goal is to finish the hike, and be back at the Jaite Trailhead parking lot, around 3:00 PM. You can find a copy of the trail maps using the following links:

All Scouts in Troop 701 are welcome to participate in the hike. However, please keep in mind that hikes of this length demand endurance and physical fitness. Additionally, Scouts participating in the 2021 Philmont trek are required to hike at least 50 miles with the merit badge group. All miles hiked count towards your Boot Club awards!

Remember to carry a full daypack with two quarts of water, trail snacks and a lunch, rain gear, spare socks, and other essentials. Please wear sturdy hiking footwear and socks as well. Also, everyone must wear a mask or face covering during the hike.

We hope you will be able to join us!

For 40 years, boys have joined Troop 701 of Strongsville, Ohio for one simple reason: "Because they wanted to." Together on the Scouting trail to Eagle they experience adventure, discovery and teamwork.
